WAIT-20

Date published:

An area for visitors, families and patients to wait prior to or during visits to a department.
A range of occupants will need to be accommodated including adults, children, able-bodied persons and people with disabilities. In many instances bariatric capacity will also be required. The size of waiting areas can vary depending on service requirements; add 1.2m2 per additional person and allow 1.5m2 for additional wheelchair spaces as required. Waiting areas may be shared between departments. Public amenities including baby change facilities should be located nearby. An external outlook is desirable.
Additional Considerations:
- Consider furniture options including weight rating of all chairs and providing built-in furniture or securing furniture where there may be safety/security concerns.
- Wall protection is recommended to protect wall linings and finishes from damage due to movement of loose furniture.
- Acoustic treatments may be considered as required to ensure the noise level in the space is comfortable both in the waiting area and adjacent reception areas.
- Check-in kiosks may be located nearby and services will need to be confirmed based on system requirements.
- Provision of a hearing augmentation system may be required where a built in amplification system is provided, if a TV monitor is installed.
- Hand hygiene facilities, such as alcohol-based hand rub, should be provided in line with local infection control policies.
